Analysis
Calls for Improved Pipeline Performance
Unocal
Ranks with the Worst Performance; Cook Inlet Pipe Line, Kenai Pipe Line
Rank with the Best Performance Anchorage, AK – From 1997-2001, Cook Inlet watershed oil and gas spills from pipeline failures and maintenance problems exceeded 50,000 gallons per year in total and spills occurred on average once per month, according to an analysis of data reported to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) released today by Cook Inlet Keeper. The report, entitled Lurking Below: Oil and Gas Pipeline Problems in the Cook Inlet Watershed, also found that pipeline companies in the Cook Inlet watershed differ greatly in their performance, with Unocal having the worst spill rate and Cook Inlet Pipe Line and Kenai Pipe Line having the best record. Cook Inlet Keeper evaluated the performance of seven companies with current Cook Inlet operations, including Unocal, Tesoro, and XTO Energy, by comparing the percent of reported spills to the percent of pipeline mileage on a per company basis (see p. 2 Report Card).
