Force Energy's Osprey Platform: No Additional Wastes in to Cook Inlet
Last year (2001), Forest Oil erected the first new offshore drilling platform in Cook Inlet since 1986. The Osprey platform sits in approximately 40 feet of water off the west foreland in some of the roughest waters in Cook Inlet. Originally, Forest Oil planned to dump its toxic drilling wastes into Cook Inlet, but after Keeper litigated to stop the dumping during exploratory activities, and after considerable dialogue with government agencies, Forest opted to reinject its wastes and steer away from additional dumping in Cook Inlet. This is a huge victory fro water quality protection, and Keeper recently submitted detailed comments on the production phase of the project to ensure that deck drainge, pipeline spills and drill noise in marine mammal habitat are addressed appropriately.
