Volunteer Requirements
Water quality monitoring requires a time commitment of one to two midday hours once per month in the winter, and twice per month in the summer (April to August).
Volunteer Training
Volunteers do not need any prior experience in water quality monitoring. Volunteers receive both classroom and field training. Trainings are held in both the spring and fall. Please check online calendar for upcoming training dates. Volunteers are provided with a detailed monitoring procedures manual and all the necessary monitoring equipment and supplies.
Monitoring schedule
Monthly (twice a month April - August) monitoring includes collection of water samples for later nutrient and phosphorus analysis, as well as on-site measurement of pH, Dissolved Oxygen, temperature, conductivity and E. coli.. These measurements are made using provided field kits. On designated water collection days, volunteers collect a set of water samples and bring them to the Cook Inletkeeper laboratories. On these days they also receive replacement equipment and supplies as needed.!
