Keep Kachemak Bay Jet-Ski Free

Petition to keep Kachemak Bay jet-ski free. (2012)

Katchemak Bay is a Jet Ski Free Zone StickerSummary: In 2001, citizens from the Kachemak Bay region and throughout southcentral Alaska secured a ban on jet skis and similar personal watercraft in the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area. Over 1850 people testified on the issue and a super majority – over 70% - supported the idea of protecting Kachemak Bay from the noise, pollution, disruption and safety concerns of personal watercraft.  Now, however, industry trade groups and user groups, with support from the Alaska Outdoor Council, are working to undue these sensible and popular safeguards. Despite the fact there are thousands of square miles along the Alaska road system for personal watercraft use, these special interest groups want every waterbody – including Kachemak Bay – to be their personal watercraft playground.

Background: The State of Alaska banned jet skis in 2001 from the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area after a carefully-considered two-year process.  Considerable information from around the country demonstrated the detrimental effects of jet skis on wildlife, fish, habitat, and community safety and values.  Because Kachemak Bay is a state-designated Critical Habitat Area, jet skis were found to be incompatible with the goals and uses of the critical habitat area. There was no practical or cost-effective way to implement zones for jet ski use and to be able to enforce them.  Because so many Alaskan waters are open to jet ski use, the State also felt it was important to provide an area in Alaska’s marine waters that did not have jet ski use. The noise from jet skis, particularly from the way they are ridden, often in small areas close to shore, at high rates of speed, creates noise problems and safety issues. A broad coalition of groups, environmental, wilderness travel, outdoor recreation, water taxis, B&Bs and more, supported a ban on jet skis in Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area.
