The Alaska State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) keeps a statewide database of contaminated sites. A contaminated site is a location where hazardous substances have been improperly disposed of. DEC has compiled a list of sites (some of them unverified) to be evaluated, prioritized and then cleaned up. 948 sites are mapped from a database obtained by Montgomery-Watson, under contract to Cook Inlet Keeper in 1997. DEC has given a high priority to 192 of these sites, and 294 of them are listed as closed. Click on a square on the map to zoom to that location.
