From dialing in your skills with a fillet knife, or recipes of all kinds, to a detailed exploration of salmon science and getting crafty with home-made salmon leather. Last month, the Department of Justice issued a briefing affirming their defense to the EPA’s 2023 Clean Water Act veto for the massive open-pit copper mine proposed in the Bristol Bay watershed as part of an ongoing lawsuit. As we celebrate the DOJ’s affirming stance on Pebble’s unacceptable risk to Bristol Bay, we keep our eyes on the long-term solution: State-driven protections for the entire Bristol Bay watershed. The Bristol Bay Forever Act is currently under consideration in the AK State Legislature.

Unexpected Life in Unmapped Waters

I’ve waded in what I consider the most beautiful waters in the world here in the Cook Inlet watershed. I’ve chased every species of salmon that call these special waters home. However, after teaming up with the Kenai Watershed Forum (KWF) for Salmon Habitat Mapping field days—a program designed to engage volunteers in documenting local, unmapped salmon habitats as part of Inletkeeper’s Local Solutions series—I can now say that fish also live in unexpected places.
