On May 26, we started what we hope will be the LAST comment period advocating for strong protections under the Clean Water Act to defend Bristol Bay from destructive mining by a Canadian company.
Many of you have been with us in this fight for years and years. Bristol Bay Native Corporation put together a timeline in 2017– 5 years ago – of what had already been an almost 40-year process since the mineral deposit was discovered.
We’ve watched as Bristol Bay has been a political football with some politicians only speaking out against Pebble Mine after the leadership of Canadian mining companies asserted that they had our elected officials in their back pockets. And Governor Dunleavy and his administration continues to take the shortsighted position of supporting extractive foreign industry over our Alaskan communities and salmon.
Despite the political back and forth, Alaskans and communities from Bristol Bay have repeatedly stood up to Defend Bristol Bay – in fact, 62% of Alaskans oppose Pebble Mine.
We asked you to comment before, we’ve asked you to testify, we’ve blogged and posted, and you have shown up–repeatedly. And today, we are counting on you to show up again.
Please take action and stand up for Bristol Bay, back up the communities of Bristol Bay, protect the bear coast, the incredible salmon runs, and the local economies that rely on the abundance of Bristol Bay.
Want to do more? Help us gather signatures and comments by sharing our petition on your social media channels or adopting blank comment postcards. Have your friends, family, and neighbors fill them out and then send them back to us to submit to the EPA (we’ll include NO Pebble Stickers).
There’s no one-size-fits-all advocacy. Do you have other skills or areas of AWESOME to help us in this fight? Please reach out! We love our Inletkeepers and you all have so many incredible skills to share in this work for Alaska and our communities!
Thank you to those of you who have been with us in this fight for over a dozen years. BUT also thank you to anyone who is taking action for the first time! We wouldn’t be at this decision point on the brink of protections for Bristol Bay without you!
AND we hope you (and all your friends, neighbors, and random people you meet on the street), will join us to tell the EPA to #FinishtheJob and #DefendBristolBay!
