We’re looking for a storyteller who believes words can protect watersheds.

Inletkeeper is seeking a Communications Strategist to help shape the narrative around climate, clean water, and community resilience across the Cook Inlet | Tikahtnu watershed. This role is for a quick, thoughtful communicator who can turn complex environmental issues into compelling campaigns that inspire people to care, act, and protect what we love.

From crafting persuasive blogs and newsletters to pitching stories and building media relationships, you’ll help elevate community voices and drive real-world impact. You’ll collaborate closely with our team to develop long-term communications strategies that reach Alaskans where they are and motivate action to safeguard our watershed and the communities that depend on it.

Communications Strategist – Job Description

Organization: Cook Inletkeeper
Location: Preferably Homer, AK, but will consider those who reside within the Cook Inlet watershed
Hours & Compensation:
40 hrs/week | Permanent position | $55,000 to $60,000 annual salary (depending on experience)

About Cook Inletkeeper

Cook Inletkeeper, founded in 1995, is a 501(c)(3) Alaska-based nonprofit working to protect the Cook Inlet | Tikahtnu watershed and the life it sustains. We work to stop harmful extractive projects while advancing renewable energy and climate justice through a Just Transition framework. Our staff lives and works on Dena’ina and Sugpiaq lands in Homer and Soldotna.

 

Position Overview

We are seeking a dynamic, skilled, and fast-paced writer who can craft compelling narratives that mobilize Alaskans around climate justice, wild salmon protection, harmful extractive projects, and community resilience.

The Communications Strategist will develop and execute strategic communications that engage communities, shape public narratives, and support regenerative, community-centered policy solutions. This role is ideal for someone who can think strategically, write quickly and clearly, and communicate confidently about complex, sometimes controversial environmental issues.

You will play a central role in shaping how our work is understood, translating complex science, policy, and advocacy into accessible messaging that inspires action and protects what we all depend on.

 

Key Responsibilities

Media & Public Relations

  • Draft press releases, pitch stories, and cultivate relationships with journalists and media outlets
  • Respond to media inquiries and support crisis communications when needed

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Develop high-impact messaging across digital platforms, including social media, email newsletters, blogs, and web content
  • Produce compelling outreach materials, educational content, and campaign storytelling
  • Oversee and update Inletkeeper’s website for accuracy, clarity, and engagement

Strategic Communications & Campaigns

  • Create and implement a long-term communications strategy aligned with organizational priorities
  • Coordinate campaign communications across print and digital formats (newsletters, blogs, toolkits, one-pagers, op-eds, and more)
  • Amplify community voices through advocacy writing and narrative storytelling

Organizational Collaboration

  • Support staff with communications strategy and message development
  • Collaborate with in-house and contracted visual communications professionals 
  • Assist with promotional materials and brand-aligned messaging (no graphic design required)

 

Qualifications & Skills

Writing & Storytelling

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and research skills
  • Ability to distill complex science, environmental, and policy issues into clear, compelling narratives
  • Experience in watchdog journalism, investigative research, or accountability reporting is a plus

Strategic Communications

  • Experience in media relations, public relations, and social media strategy
  • Proven ability to develop and execute multi-channel communications campaigns
